Cake By The Ocean Tee

Updated: Apr 10, 2021

Have you been seeing all of those colorful yarn cakes in the yarn section and wondering what to make with them? Well, wonder no more, have I got the perfect project for you! This is a fun and easy project which only takes one cake of yarn for a size small. I love the retro vibes and bright colors, I can't wait to wear it for a stroll down the boardwalk, or use it as a topper over a bathing suit!

Full video tutorial is linked below.

Level:

Easy Intermediate

Sizing:

Design suggests 3 - 4 inches of positive ease around fullest part of bust.

Easy to customize pattern to fit your size.

Materials:

Approx. 795 yards of size 3 weight yarn for size small.

I used Caron Skinny Cakes in Lime Twist

Size I/5.5 mm crochet hook

Size H/5 mm crochet hook

Guage:

Not necessary for this project.

Stitches used:

Sc - Single crochet

Dc - Double crochet

Tr - triple crochet

Stacked Sc - Used as first dc in row indicated. Sc in stitch indicated, turn your sc to the side and sc again in the 2 side loops.

Corner Chain 2 - Chain 2, sc in same stitch as your last sc

Corner Increase - 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc in ch 2 space

Top is worked from the top down, and sleeves are constructed in joined rounds.

Yoke:

Using size I/5.5 mm hook:

R1- Chain 67, turn chain over to back, sc in "back bump" of second chain from hook, and in each chain across. (66 sc)

R2- Being careful not to twist your row, join to first stitch with a slip stitch, ch 1, turn. (You can stitch the little "gap" together between the beginning and end of the row with the tail later). Sc in first stitch. (Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch) 4 times. Corner chain 2. (Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch) 4 times. Corner chain 2. (Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch) 7 times. Corner chain 2. (Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch) 4 times. Corner chain 2. (Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch) 2 times. Chain 2, join to first sc.

R3- Chain 1, turn, stacked sc in ch 2 space. 2 dc in same ch 2 space. *3 dc in each ch 2 space. Corner increase in the corner chain 2 from previous row. Repeat from * around row, join to first stitch.

R4- Chain 1, turn, sc before the first 3 dc group from previous row. *Chain 2, sc between the next 2 dc groups. *Note the sc's are not going into a stitch, they are worked in the space between the groups. Corner chain 2 in the chain 1 space of corner increase from previous row. Repeat from * around row, ending with a chain 2, join to first sc.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until the front and back edges (the wider sections) measure about half of what you'd like your final bust circumference to be. I wear a size small, and my back edge measured 19" from corner to corner. Make sure you end with a dc row.

*Pro Tip - If at any point you would like to discontinue the sleeve section increases, you would modify the first corner increase by instead working 3 dc, ch 1 into the corner chain 2, and 3 dc into the next ch 2 space. After the last 3 dc group of the sleeve section, ch 1, 3 dc into the corner chain 2, proceed with 3 dc in the next ch 2 space. Repeat for other sleeve section.

Next Row- Repeat row 4 until you reach first corner increase. *Sc in chain 1 space of corner increase. Skip entire sleeve section, sc in chain 1 space of next corner increase. Proceed in same way as row 4. Repeat from *.

Next Row- Chain 1, turn, stacked sc in ch 2 space. 2 dc in same ch 2 space. *3 dc in each ch 2 space. When you reach underarm, place 3 dc between the 2 sc. Repeat from *. Join to first stitch.

Next Row - Chain 1, turn, sc before the first 3 dc group from previous row. *Chain 2, sc between the next 2 dc groups. Repeat from * around row, ending with chain 2, join to first sc.

Repeat the last 2 rows until you reach desired length for your top. I made mine 10" beyond the underarm.

Scalloped edge row

Chain 3, turn, tr, dc, in same stitch as chain 3. *Slip stitch into next sc from previous row. chain 3, tr, dc in same stitch as chain 3. Repeat from *, ending with a slip stitch at base of beginning chain 3.

Sleeves

Using a size h/5 mm hook

R1- Join yarn to wrong side of first sleeve at chain 1 space of first corner at underarm. Ch 1, sc in same space. *Chain 2, sc between the next 2 dc groups. Repeat from * ending with a sc in the other chain 1 space of other corner. Join to first sc.

R2- Chain 1, turn, slip stitch into first sc, and into the ch 2 space. Chain 3, 2 dc in same space, *3 dc in next ch 2 space. Repeat from *, join to top of chain 3.

R3- Chain 1, turn, sc before the first 3 dc group from previous row. *Chain 2, sc between the next 2 dc groups. Repeat from * around row, ending with chain 2, join to first sc.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 for desired length of sleeve.

Repeat scalloped edge row.

You may add a row of sc around neck edge for a decorative touch.

Weave in all ends. Enjoy your adorable new top!
