Shelby Shrug

I wanted to design a shrug that had a rustic quality you could just pop on over anything and zoom out the door for a quick errand or a walk with your dog. This shrug works up in ONE piece and has a better fit than typical shrugs. You'll want to make several of these in your favorite colors!

Full video tutorial is linked below.

Level:

Intermediate

Sizing:

One size fits most, shrug is meant to be very boxy and loose-fitting. I normally wear a size small, I am wearing shrug in photo above. I will give instructions on how to alter size.

Materials:

2 balls (approx. 500 yds.) Camden Wool Big! in the color Cream

Or any size 5 bulky weight yarn

Size N/10 mm. Crochet Hook

Guage:

Using N hook - 7 1/2 stitches of 4 row pattern = 4"

Stitches used:

Hdc Puff Stitch - Begin a hdc as normal, but instead of pulling through last 3 loops on hook, yo again, insert hook into same stitch, yo, pull through all 5 loops on hook

Herringbone double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull through first loop on hook, ch 1, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook

Sc - Single crochet

Dc - Double crochet

Hdc - Half double crochet

Sl st - Slip stitch

Fphdc - Front post hdc - stitch is worked around post of stitch from previous row inserting hook from the front.

Bphdc - Back post hdc - stitch is worked around post of stitch from previous row inserting hook from the back.

**Sizing Notes: Instructions below are for the basic size.

Finished back is approx. 24.5" across when laid flat.

Shrug is approx. 26" long from base of neck to mid-hip.

I will give instructions on how to make larger below. Larger sizing notes will be marked where you see **.

Lower Back:

R1- Using N hook, start with a slip knot, and loosely chain 24. Sc in second chain from hook, and in each chain across. (23 sc)

**If you want to make your shrug longer, you may add extra chains, keeping in mind every 2 extra chains will add one inch in length. Keep an even number of starting chains, and make note of how many chains you added.

R2- Chain 1, turn, hdc puff stitch in first stitch, *ch 1, skip one stitch, hdc puff stitch in next stitch. Repeat from * across, ending with a puff st in last stitch.

R3- Chain 1, turn, dc in the front loop of the first st. Herringbone dc in front loop of next stitch, and in each front loop across, ending with an hdc in last front loop. (I end these herringbone rows with an hdc to compensate for the "lean" of the herringbone sts. I begin the rows with a ch 1, dc for the same reason)

R4- Chain 1, turn, dc in both loops of the first st. Herringbone dc in both loops of next stitch, and in each stitch across, ending with an hdc in last stitch.

Rows 5-33 Repeat rows 1-4, ending with a row 1 (sc row). Do not finish off.

Piece should now measure approx. 12.5 " wide by 24.5" long.

**If you want your shrug wider, you may add more rows (following 4-row stitch pattern), ending with a row 1 (sc row).

Turn piece with right side facing you, long edge at top, short rows are vertical. The right side is the "pretty side" where the back loops you didn't stitch into from row 2 are showing. See photo below.

Here's a close-up of the right side of the fabric

Attach new piece of yarn (from your other ball) to upper right corner of panel. Chain 23, and finish off this piece of yarn.

**If you made your lower back panel longer as described above, add the same number of chains here as you did to starting chain.

Go back to your other yarn in progress, and chain 24.

**If you made your lower back panel longer as described above, add the same number of chains here as you did to starting chain.

R1- Turn chain and sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (23 sc along chain). Now evenly sc along long edge of panel, making sure you have an odd number of stitches along panel. Sc in each chain at other end (23 sc along this chain).

Rows 2-4 Repeat pattern as before with puff stitch row, and then the 2 herringbone rows.

Rows 5-14 Repeat 4-row stitch pattern as before, ending with a puff stitch row

R15- Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across. Finish off yarn.

**In summary, if you lengthen your shrug, the extension stitch counts need to equal your lower back panel stitch count.

Lay piece with wrong side facing you and long extensions out to the sides. Fold down the extensions so the short edges line up with bottom edge of back. The piece will look "triangular" at this point. On left side, measure down 6" from the top of shoulder fold, and stitch together side seam from this point down. Repeat for right side.

Bottom Ribbing:

Turn piece with bottom edge facing up and attach yarn to corner.

R1- Ch 1, hdc evenly across entire lower edge of shrug.

R2- Ch 1, turn, hdc in first stitch. *Fphdc around next stitch, bphdc around next stitch. Repeat from * across row, ending with an hdc in last stitch.

R3- Repeat row 2, but your fphdc's will be around the stitches that pop out to the front, and the bphdc's will around the stitches that pop out to the back.

Repeat like row 3 for as long as you would like your ribbing. I made mine 7 rows wide. Do not finish off.

Front Ribbing:

Ch 1 and turn to work on entire front edge.

Rows 1-3 Repeat the same process as bottom ribbing. I made my ribbing 3 rows wide.

Enjoy your cozy and beautiful shrug!

Replying to

Yes, you'll just need to use a smaller hook, start with more chains to add more length, and make your back panel wider.
