Star-Crossed Headband

Here is a fun, quick project you can make anytime with yarn you probably already have in your stash! I love to make and wear hats, but this colorful headband is perfect for more active days. If you're a beginner, you'll have fun learning some new stitches!

Full video tutorial is linked below.

Level:

Beginner

Materials:

Scrap amounts of 2 colors of size 4 weight yarn

Size J/6 mm. crochet hook suggested, but any size hook will work

Guage:

Not important for this project ;)

Stitches used:

Sc - Single crochet

Dc - Double crochet

Hdc - Half double crochet

Sl st - Slip stitch

Fphdc - Front post hdc - stitch is worked around post of stitch from previous row inserting hook from the front.

Bphdc - Back post hdc - stitch is worked around post of stitch from previous row inserting hook from the back.

Camel st - hdc in front 3rd loop of hdc from previous row

R1- (Using trim color) Make a chain that fits snug around the fullest part of your head - making sure it is an odd number. My chain turned out to be 57. Turn chain over, and sc in the second chain from hook (I like to go into the "back bump" of the chain). *Dc in next stitch, sc in next stitch. Repeat from * across chain, your last stitch will be a dc in the last chain. Bring the 2 ends of your first row together (with no twists!), insert your hook into the first stitch, drop your yarn, and pull through your second color of yarn (main color) through the stitch, and through the loop on your hook. You may cut your first color yarn at this point, leaving a tail for weaving in. There will be a gap between the beginning and end of your starting chain you can stitch up later with your starting tail.

R2- Chain 1, turn, skip the joining stitch, (sc in the first stitch, dc in the next stitch) across. Your sc's will be going into the dc's from the previous row, and your dc's will be going into the sc's. Your last dc will go into the same stitch as your join. Join with a slip stitch to your first stitch.

R3- Chain 1, turn. Skip the joining stitch, hdc in each stitch across. Your last hdc will be in the same stitch as your join. Join with a slip stitch to your first stitch.

R4- Chain 1, turn, skip the joining stitch, in the next stitch, hdc in the "3rd loop" that's in the front of the hdc from the previous row. This is called the camel stitch. Repeat the camel stitch to the end of the row. Your last camel stitch will be in the same stitch as your join. Join with a slip stitch to your first stitch.

R5- Chain 2, turn, skip the joining stitch, and the next stitch, *dc in the next stitch. Now we are going to create a crossed dc! Yarn over and go around the back post of the dc you just created. Insert hook into skipped stitch (inserting hook from the front), and complete your dc stitch. This sounds complicated, but you can watch video below for the complete demo for this row! Explanation begins @ 5:24.

Skip the next st, repeat from * across row. Join to first stitch, ignoring the chain 2.

R6- Chain 1, turn, skip the joining stitch, hdc in the front loops (of your previous crossed dc's) across. Insert your hook into the first stitch, drop your yarn, and pull through your first color of yarn (trim color) through the stitch, and through the loop on your hook. You may cut your main color yarn at this point, leaving a tail for weaving in.

R7- Chain 1, turn, skip the joining stitch, hdc in the back loops across (the back loop of the top "v" of your previous hdc's). Join to first stitch.

R8- Chain 1, turn, *fphdc around first stitch. Bphdc around next stitch. Repeat from * across. Your last stitch should be a bphdc. Join to first stitch, finish off your yarn. Weave in all your ends. Don't forget to stitch up that gap between the ends of your starting chain.

Enjoy your beautiful new headband!
