Stitch Sampler Pocket Shawl

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Are you ready for a super fun project? This shawl may look complicated, but it works up quickly with chunky yarn, and has many unique textured stitches you may have never tried before. This is a perfect stashbuster project - a year ago a good friend donated several balls of chunky yarn to me, and I finally designed the perfect shawl to use it all up!

Pocket Shawl Free Crochet Pattern with Chunky yarn

Pocket Shawl Free Crochet Pattern with Chunky yarn

Level:

Intermediate

Sizing:

One Size Fits All

Shawl pictured is approx. 58” in length by 18" wide

Materials:

At least 5 balls of Bulky weight size 5 yarn. Yardage may vary depending on color choices.

I recommend using various colors! I used 5 different colors - mostly "Charisma" yarn from Michael's

M/9 mm Crochet Hook

Stitches used:

Dc – Double crochet

Hdc - Half double crochet

Sl st - Slip stitch

Sc - Single crochet

Camel st - hdc in front 3rd loop of hdc from previous row

Chainless dc – Used at the beginning of each dc row. Turn work without turning chain, sc loosely in first stitch, then sc again in left side 2 loops of the sc just created - you're just "stacking" the 2 single crochets on top of each other.

More stitches will be explained in pattern below.

**Important Notes: At the end of each row (unless otherwise indicated), tie off and leave a good size tail approx. 6". These tails will be included in the fringe later.

Turn work at the end of each row. Change colors as desired with each new row by joining new yarn with a sl st into first stitch (keep a 6" tail).

R1- Suzette stitch: Loosely chain 110. Sc, dc in 2nd chain. *Skip 1 chain, sc, dc in next chain. Repeat from *, ending with sc in last chain.

R2- Ch 1, sc, dc in first st, *skip 1 st, sc, dc in next stitch. Repeat from *, ending with sc in last st.

Rows 3 - 4 Repeat row 2.

R5- Block Stitch part 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch. Repeat from * across ending with sc in last stitch.

R6- Block Stitch part 2: Chainless dc in first stitch, *3 dc in next ch 2 space. Repeat from * ending with a dc in last stitch.

R7- Block Stitch part 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 2, skip 3 stitches, sc between the two 3dc groups. Repeat from * across ending with sc in last stitch.

R8- Repeat row 6.

R9- Repeat row 7.

R10- Ch 1, hdc in first stitch, *2 hdc in next ch 2 space, hdc in next sc. Repeat from * ending with hdc in last sc. I chose to keep this same color for next row, so no need to tie off on this row.

R11- Floret Stitch: Ch 1, *sl st in first stitch, dc in next stitch. Repeat from * across ending with sl st in last stitch.

R12- Ch 1, hdc in each stitch across.

R13- Camel Stitch: Join yarn in front loop of hdc from previous row, ch 1, hdc in front loop and in each front loop of hdc's across.

R14- Crossed DC: Chainless dc in first stitch, skip 1 st, dc in next st. Now we are going to create a crossed dc! Yarn over and go around the back post of dc you just created. Insert hook into skipped stitch (inserting hook from the front), and complete your dc stitch. This sounds complicated, but you can watch video below for the complete demo for this row! Time stamp is @ 9:19.

Now, the rest of the shawl will be repeating what we already did, but in reverse order - sort of...

Here we go:

R15- Repeat row 12 (hdc's)

R16- Repeat row 13 (Camel st)

R17- Repeat row 11 (Floret st)

R18- Repeat row 10 (hdc's)

Rows 19 - 23 Repeat rows 5 - 9 (Block st)

Row 24 - Ch 1, sc, dc in first st. *(Sc, dc in next ch2 space) twice. Sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * ending with sc in last stitch.

Rows 25 - 27 Repeat row 2 (Suzette st)

Ribbed Edging:

On right side at the end of first long edge, join yarn, chain 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in remaining 2 chains.

Working along long edge, *sl st into next 3 unworked sts. Turn your work without a turning chain, skip the 3 slip stitches, and sc into back loops of the 3 sc's from first row of ribbing. Ch 1, turn, sc in back loops of the 3 sc's. Repeat from *, finish off at the end of this edge.

Make ribbing along other long edge in same manner.

POCKETS - MAKE (2)

R1- Chain 13, hdc in 2nd ch and in each ch across (12 hdc)

R2- Ch 1, turn, camel stitch in each st across.

R3- Ch 1, turn, hdc in back loops in each st across.

Rows 4 - 9 repeat rows 2 and 3, ending with row 1. Do not finish off.

Turn work, sc evenly across bottom edge of pocket.

Turn and sc in each stitch along first row (side of pocket).

Ch 1, sc 13 along top edge of pocket. Ch 1, turn (still at top edge), sl st in first st, dc in next st across (Floret st). Finish off, keeping long tail to sew pocket to shawl.

Now just place and pin pockets to front of shawl where desired. I placed mine 1" from bottom edges of shawl, not quite center - a little closer to front edges.

Sew in place.

FRINGE

Cut lengths of yarn approx. 13" long (I wrapped yarn lengthwise around a DVD box multiple times, and then cut one end).

Grab 3 strands of this cut yarn and fold in half. On wrong side bottom edge of shawl, with your hook pull the center of your strands of yarn through shawl part-way. Grab the tails and include any nearby tails from your finished rows, and pull through the loop you created with your hook.

Repeat along both bottom edges of your shawl.

Enjoy your beautiful and one-of-a-kind cozy shawl!
