Virginia Velvet Cowl

Writer's picture: LizLiz

Last month my youngest daughter asked me If I could please create a cowl/capelet that she could wear for Halloween. It had to be super cool (she's a teenager), and a little on the "gothic" side. She picked out some black-white-gray velvet yarn, and I went from there. I thought it would be interesting to work it in a vertical graduated ribbing with a textured lacy border, and she loved it!

I named this cowl in honor my dear Mother-in-Law, Virginia, who passed on three years ago. She loved the crocheted things I would make for her. I think she would have enjoyed this one too.

Level:

Easy

Materials:

Bulky velvet yarn, I used Bernat Crushed Velvet Stitch ‘N Win Yarn in Toasted Plum

1 Ball

K/6.5 mm Crochet Hook

Stitches Used:

Sc – single crochet

Dcflo – double crochet through the front loop only

Trflo – triple crochet through the front loop only

Ch – chain stitch

Puff Stitch - Yarn over and insert the hook into the stitch. Yarn over and draw through same stitch. There will be 5 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.

Notes:

The top neck and shoulder portion is worked in rows vertically, and then finished with a lacy border.

Sizing:

Cowl is one size fits all, and can easily be made into any circumference.

Gauge:

Gauge is not essential for this project.

NECK/SHOULDER RIBBING:

Using K Hook

Make note all sc’s will be worked into the back loop only, and all of the dc’s and tr’s will be worked into the front loop only.

R1- Ch 18, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in next 5 chains, dc in next 3 chains, tr in next 8 chains. (17 sts)

R2- Ch 3 (counts as 1 tr), turn, trflo in next 7 tr, dcflo in next 3 dc, scblo in remaining 6 sc’s.

R3- Ch 1, turn, scblo in each sc, dcflo in each dc, trflo in each tr, ending with a tr in the loop closest to you at the top of the ch3 from previous row.

Rows 4 – 37 Repeat rows 2 and 3, or until you have reached desired circumference around neck, ending with a row 3.

LACE BORDER:

Turn work and proceed to work the following rows along the bottom edge of neck/shoulder ribbing.

R1- Ch 1, sc at beginning of row. Ch 3, sc across, spacing out the sc’s at each triple stitch interval, ending with a sc at end of row (37 ch 3 groups)

Row 1 of lace border in progress

R2- Ch 3 (counts as a tr), turn, 3 tr in each ch3 space across, ending with a tr in last sc.

R3- Ch 1, turn, puff stitch in first st, *ch 3, skip next 3 tr, puff st BETWEEN the last skipped tr and the next tr. Repeat from * across ending with a puff st in last stitch.

Puff stitches are worked between the triple crochet groups

R4- Ch 4, turn, tr in same stitch. *Slip st in into top of next puff st from previous row, ch 4, tr in same stitch. Repeat from * across ending with a sl st in last puff st. This row creates an easy type of “scalloped” effect.

The triple crochet/ch 4's create a quick and easy scallop

R5- Turn, *Ch 6, sl st into side 2 loops of 3rd ch from hook (picot just made), ch 4, sl st in next sl st. Repeat from * across.

Finish off, weave in all ends. To close, I sewed 2 buttons on the left edge, or you can use a shawl pin like my daughter did below!
